Meal & Rest Periods/Expense Reimbursement
California Employment Laws: Meal and Rest Breaks
In the state of California, employees are generally entitled to at least a 30-minute lunch break if they work more than five hours in a day. California employees are also entitled to a 10-minute rest break for every four hours they work.
If your employer has not been giving you meal or rest breaks, contact us. Learn more about your rights by speaking with an employment law attorney at Appell | Hilaire | Benardo LLP. Our firm practices exclusively in employment law cases.

Other Wage-and-Hour Issues
At Appell | Hilaire | Benardo LLP, we have helped many employees protect and assert their rights. Unfortunately, many employees do not fully understand their rights. Employers often choose not to volunteer information that could be costly to their bottom line.
In addition to meal and rest periods, employees in California have a right to be paid overtime wages unless they are exempt employees. Many employees who are actually nonexempt employees are classified by their employer as exempt employees.
After many years of practicing employment law, we have found that where one violation of a wage-and-hour issue has occurred, other issues and violations are often present. Often, employees who are denied a right to adequate meal and rest periods are also denied other important rights guaranteed by state or federal employment laws.
Expense Reimbursement
Employees who incur out-of-pocket costs while performing their jobs are entitled to timely, accurate and complete repayment. Common expenses include travel costs, equipment and mileage. Even home office expenses are subject to reimbursement in certain cases, as is the cost of traveling from one workplace to another. Our employment law attorneys can help you assess whether you have not been properly or fully compensated for job-related expenses.
